The 21st “Public Science Day” was held on May 17, 2025. The Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (CSTAM) and the Institutes of Mechanics, CAS (IMECH) welcomed over 7,000 visitors to explore the technologies and experience the charm of mechanics. Researchers and students from the institute interacted with the visitors, fostering a dynamic exchange of knowledge and ideas.
Academician He Guowei, President of CSTAM and Academic Director of IMECH, delivered the opening speech, emphasizing the foundational role of mechanics in China’s scientific and technological progress. Professor Huang Heji, Member of CSTAM and Director of IMECH, gave an invited lecture titled "Reaching for the Stars with Mechanics," guiding the audience on a captivating journey from Newtonian mechanics to Qian Xuesen’s missile theories.
Interactive mechanics experiments and themed exhibitions brought science to life, while IMECH opened its key laboratories and major scientific facilities to the public, promoting scientific spirit and sparking curiosity, particularly among the young visitors.
A group of 30 international students from 15 countries, currently studying at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, also participated in the event. They not only deepened the understanding of mechanics but also gained insights into China’s rapid development in science and technology through interactive experiences.
Public Science Day is an event that has been held in China since 2005. It has grown into a captivating science festival that has attracted the participation of numerous science institutes and millions of both offline and online visitors over the past two decades.
